Bromby's Games hopes shattered

A despondent Peter Bromby will return home tomorrow after failing to qualify for an unprecedented fifth Olympic Games at the 2008 Star Worlds in Miami this week.

Sailing with crew Lee White, Bromby was yesterday black flagged for the second time during the regatta for crossing the start line prematurely and forced to settle for 93rd position in the overall points standings, well outside the Olympic qualifying mark he had hoped to achieve in order to secure passage to this summer's Games in Beijing.

By his own high standards Bromby hasn't enjoyed the best of times in Miami over the past week where he has been penalised twice for crossing the start line before the starter's gun and failed to finish a race after breaking his mast.

"It's been a nightmare but these things happen in sailing," the Bermudian skipper lamented after being disqualified in yesterday's finale.

Yesterday's outcome was a far cry from a week ago when Bromby and White finished fourth in the opening race to head into the weekend on a high.

But a black flag in race two ultimately proved to be an ominous sign of things to follow as Bromby lost momentum, suffering one setback after another.
