Caymans bank on pro 'keeper

Tuda Murphy

Professional goalkeeper Tuda Murphy (pictured below) will again be between the sticks for Cayman Islands when they lock horns with Bermuda in Sunday's crunch showdown.

Murphy has returned from Irish Premier outfit Glenavon FC to join up with the Cayman squad for their final preparations ahead of the World Cup qualifying decider.

The 27-year-old, who turned professional this season, believes Cayman are the masters of their own destiny after pulling off a surprise 1-1 draw at the National Sports Centre in last month's first leg.

"I feel honoured to have been invited to Cayman Islands national team to represent my country," said Murphy who previously played for George Town FC in his country's domestic league. "It is like going to war as a soldier fighting for my country. I look forward to playing and doing it professionally to make my country proud."

"Glenavon FC were pleased with my efforts in the first game to give Cayman Islands the advantage going into the second round."

He added: "Goalkeeping is a dirty job as you have the responsibility to clean up the mistakes of all who play in the middle. No one wants to do it and it is unforgivable if a goal passes you. Goalkeeping is serious business and it's a serious job it makes you feel guilty sometimes."

President of Cayman Islands Football Association (CIFA), Jeffery Webb, was impressed with Murphy's performance in the first leg with Murphy thwarting Bermuda's attack with a series of saves.

"I am really proud not only as the president of CIFA but as a proud Caymanian to see a son of this soil elevating himself to this level," he said. "I am confident that he will do his duties well and help us to advance to the next level of this qualifying round."

The burly custodian was made to wait for his international call-up as understudy to Caymans' former keeper Alfredo Whittaker, who is now a FIFA qualified referee.

According to technical director coach Carl Brown, Tuda's addition to the team has helped propel them from 191 to 183 in the FIFA rankings.

Murphy has made 27 appearances for Glenavon FC this season with the team lying in 12th in the Carnegie Irish Premier Division. Former Northern Ireland international Terry Cochrane is the team's coach.
