Chanderpaul warns Guyana will be wary of Bermuda in 20/20
@$:[AT]bylinerg:By Colin Thompson [AT]bodyindent:West Indies star batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul says defending Stanford 20/20 champions Guyana will not be taking anything for granted when they come up against Bermuda in Antigua early next month. The 33-year-old stylish left handed batsman is currently on tour with the Windies in South Africa, but is due back in the Caribbean next month where he will be eager to finally to make his Stanford 20/20 Tournament debut after missing the inaugural event in 2007.Chanderpaul has been by far the most consistent batsman on the West Indies' current tour of South Africa, and his presence in Antigua next month is sure to enhance Guyana's chances of retaining the trophy and pocketing the $1 million jackpot. But first the defending champions will have to venture into the unknown against a Bermuda side Chanderpaul has warned his teammates not to take lightly as he knows all too well that "anything is possible" in one day cricket."It gets even tighter in a 20/20 match and Bermuda are more suited to the short version of the game," the star batsman told The Royal Gazette. "They played in the last World Cup so they have that experience and they will come looking to upset us."Bermuda have some big guys who can hit the ball pretty far, so they have the freedom to come out and throw the bat and don't really matter where the ball goes and put runs on the board. They should be able to defend their score."He added:"What we (Guyana) have to do is get our strategies right and put some strategies in place and put some plans on place to play the match and outsmart them and win the game. The boys went out and did the job the last time around so that means everyone will be coming at us hard, as we are the defending champions."But we have a good, solid team and the aim will be to go out and repeat." Chanderpaul has appeared in 107 Test matches for the West Indies in a career dating back in 1994 when he made his debut against England at his beloved Bourda Ground in Georgetown, Guyana. To date he has compiled close to 7,500 Test runs at an average of 47.31 with a high score of 203 not out achieved against South Africa also at Bourda. He has also chalked up 17 centuries.Chanderpaul's one day record is no less impressive as he has managed to compile a staggering 7,158 runs, including eight centuries in 226 appearances, with a career best 150 in the shortened version of the game also achieved against South Africa. It is these sobering stats Bermuda's bowlers will have in the back of their minds when they attempt to dismiss the defending champion's explosive batting order that also contains Chanderpaul's West Indies team-mates Ramnaresh Sarwan and Sewnarine Chattergoon."If you look at the one-day game you aim to score at 10 runs in the last 10 overs so this shows the kind of scores you would be able to put up in a 20/20 match," added Chanderpaul, whose wife Amy recently gave birth to the couple's first child."You can end up with 150, 160, 170 or maybe more. "When you look at it, if you get a good start you can end up with 200. Anybody can win, anybody can lose. "What you have to do is go out and play it hard and back yourself to do the job in a big way."
