Coach Tucker sees positives in strong first-half performance
Bermuda coach Keith Tucker backed his men to come good in the second game against Puerto Rico tomorrow despite being handed a lesson in possession football by the Caribbean side at the National Sports Centre last night.
The hosts were sunk by two goals in the second half courtesy of Taylor Graham and Andres Cabrero in the first match of a double header.
But Tucker preferred to focus on the positives of the first 45 minutes, in which Aljame Zuill missed a gilt-edged chance when put clean through Keishen Bean with the goal at his mercy.
"I think I got just what I wanted out of it, that, with so much time in the first half, we have got to be able to play the ball and keep possession of the ball," he said.
"That was a good example of how to play possession football - we were shown it can be played on the ground and played simple.
"In the first half I was really impressed with our control of the ball and we had some organisation there.
"In the second half we made some changes in there that hurt us a bit because we didn't have an attacking midfield player available."
Tucker believes Bermuda failed to keep up the pressure on Puerto Rico after the break and were made to pay for lapses in concentration, with both goals coming from set pieces, the first a free header at the near post and the second after they failed to clear their lines and the ball was driven back in.
"It is nice playing for 45 minutes, but we have got to play for 90 minutes of soccer," he said.
However, Tucker reckons the wind had its part to play, and he added that Puerto Rico adapted to it better than Bermuda, who were unable to take advantage of it in the opening half and had played into it in the second period.
But now he is just looking forward to the future with a chance to gain immediate revenge on Puerto Rico tomorrow, followed by the preliminary round World Cup qualifier at home to the Cayman Islands next month.
"It is all about getting ready for the future," he said.
"Against the (other) Caribbean teams, they are not as organised as Puerto Rico, so hopefully we'll go a lot further against them.
"And I am pretty sure, after tonight, we'll come back on Friday and be good - I think the guys are ready and they will come back well.
"Our ball game has changed a lot since I have been here and we are looking to continue building on that."
