Colts mourn Nusum
Shannon Nusum became the third local footballer to die on Bermuda's roads this year.
Twenty-year-old Nusum, a promising midfielder at Devonshire Colts, succumbed to serious head injuries suffered in a traffic collision on North Shore Road last Monday.
He is the fifth road fatality this year.
Nusum joined Colts three-seasons ago and was in the process cementing a permanent spot on Ray Jones' team that recently gained promotion to the Premier Division next season.
Team-mate and former Bermuda skipper Shannon Burgess described the late footballer as a "dedicated" individual.
"Shannon (Nusum) was a fun guy and we were pleased when he came to Devonshire Colts a few years ago. I think the primary reason for him coming to Colts was to play with his cousin Keimon (Lawrence) who has played with us all of his life," he said.
"He was a welcome addition to the team who had a lot of talent. He broke into the senior team on a few occasions but never really commanded a starting position. But he was the type of player who kept trying hard in training and we always hoped he would blossom into one of the senior players in the team."
Colts' club officials and team members met last night to mourn the loss of their team-mate.
"Obviously the guys are taken back by the events of this week," Burgess added.
"And there comes a time when football isn't important anymore. But this is also another step in life, and we must all come through it together."
Colts are currently locked in a two-horse race for the First Division championship with Ireland Rangers and are scheduled to meet Southampton Rangers tomorrow and Prospect United next Wednesday night at the National Sports Centre's northern field in their final two matches that could decide the title.
