Cougars aim to book place in semis

Sizzling Devonshire Cougars will be looking to join Dandy Town in the Martonmere Cup semi-finals when they lock horns with Boulevard tonight at BAA Field.

So far the Big Cats have been unstoppable, turning back the challenges of Devonshire Colts (Charity Cup) and Somerset (Martonmere) in their first two outings of the season, hardly breaking a sweat.

Skipper Kwame Steede has been the catalyst for Cougars' menacing early season form, bagging successive hat tricks to quickly take his season tally to six.

Cougars have also been impressive in defence, allowing just one goal - an own goal at that - against Trojans in their opening Martonmere Cup Group A clash earlier this month at BAA Field.

Now Steede and supporting cast must brace themselves for the challenge of a Boulevard side determined to put their best foot forward in memory of late skipper Shaki Crockwell this season.

But the Big Cats, who need only steal a point off Blazers to advance to the final four, will not be taking anything for granted when the ball drops tonight at BAA Field, team officials declared.

"We have definitely done our homework and intend to put our strongest team on the pitch because nothing is guaranteed.

"We are going to approach this match as we do any other and try to win while also entertaining the fans by playing attractive football," a team spokesperson said.

"We are confident, but not over confident, and continue to grow as a team. So there's no pressure on us because we know what we have to bring to the game and our goal is to improve with each passing game."

Despite all the off-field hardships his team have endured recently, Blazers coach John Rebello is confident his charges can make a good showing against Cougars.

"We know what we are up against, but we are going into this match with an attitude to win," he declared.

"We know it's not going to be easy. But our first priority is to make a good account of ourselves and then see where the chips fall at the end of the day."

Meanwhile, the 2007-08 First Division campaign kicks off tomorrow with promotion hopefuls Wolves and Southampton Rangers pitted together at the Den in the day's top billing.

Elsewhere, X Roads host Somerset Eagles at Garrison Field, Social Club tackle Prospect United at Bernard Park and St. George's clash with division newcommers BAA at Wellington Oval.
