Elizabeth captures coveted crown
Challengers Elizabeth regained the coveted Jubilee Cup during fitted dinghy racing in St. George's Harbour last weekend.
With champions Victory, helmed by Michael Oatley, determined to defend the title they won last year, Elizabeth showed up and stole their thunder to emerge victorious during an evenly contested match race.
Victory won the toss and elected to start off the starboard side of the stakeboat. Both boats split on the first windward beat after getting hauls off the start and remained within a boat's length of each other at the top of the beat. Gradually, however, Elizabeth was able to distance herself from Victory as the race wore on and eventually claimed line honours.
Elizabeth, helmed by John Nicholls, also lifted the St.George's Dinghy and Sports Club Cup to make it a memorable afternoon during the day's third race with Contest, eizing line honours in the second.
With one race remaining in the season for the Coronation Cup, Contest III leads the fleet with 68 points followed by Victory IV (46.75), Challenger II (42.50) and Elizabeth II in fourth with 39.75 points.
Final race day has been set-aside for September 16 in Mangrove Bay, Somerset.
