Ex-Crystal Palace man Broadley linked to BFA technical director post
Former Crystal Palace academy director Derek Broadley has emerged as the latest candidate to be linked with the Bermuda Football Association's (BFA) technical director's position.
Sources have confirmed that the highly regarded coach has applied for the $125,000 per annum post, but when contacted yesterday the BFA refused to comment on whether Broadley was their chosen man.
President Larry Mussenden has already revealed the BFA are currently waiting for an overseas candidate to agree to the terms of the position with an appointment expected in the next few weeks.
Broadley, head coach of US franchise Rage Soccer Club, has conducted numerous clinics on the Island for local coaches and is well known to Bermuda Football Foundation (BFF) founders Richard and Robert Calderon.
Richard Calderon, a former BFA technical committee executive, said he did not know whether Englishman Broadley had been offered the job but believed he had the right pedigree for the role.
"Having worked with Derek on coaching clinics in Bermuda I know he's an excellent coach and instructor," he said. "He has a very good coaching background and believe he would be a great candidate."
Rage Soccer Club's ties with Bermuda were strengthened last year when BFF founders Richard and Robert Calderon, along with Clyde Best, purchased a 30 percent stake in the outfit to provide a path for young local players.
Based in Pennsylvania, the Rage has a team in the USL's PDL Championship, which caters for college players. The league is effectively one tier below the USL-D2, which includes the Bermuda Hogges.
The Royal Gazette revealed last month that former Reggae Boyz coach Rene Simoes and ex-England striker Paul Mariner were no longer in the running for the technical director's vacancy.
Both high profile names had appeared on a BFA list of candidates, which also included Trinidadian Stephen Hart, a former Canada national team coach, and British Virgin Islands (BVI) technical director Ben Davies.
