Flatts All-Stars triumph in Sixes tourney
A seasoned Flatts All-Star team defeated Cleveland County in a bowl-off at Lords on Saturday to win the inaugural Lionel Mello Sixes Cricket Tournament.
Assistant national coach Herbie Bascome and veteran all-rounder Derek Wright led Flatts to victory by breaking the stumps during a pressure-filled bowl-off after fading light prevented opposing teams from taking guard in the middle.
No Cleveland bowler managed to disturb the bails, giving Flatts' oldies bragging rights for the next 12 months.
"We had an over-40s team and everyone was calling us the veterans. They all called us the veterans but they feared the old man," commented Flatts hero Wright afterwards.
"It was a lot of fun and the competition was well organised. The organisers did an excellent job."
On the way to the final Flatts beat St.David's Blue by seven runs while Cleveland nudged past St.David's Gold by one run in two semi final nailbiters that kept fans on the edge of their seats.
"It was very some exciting cricket played and hopefully this event will continue to grow," Wright added.
The inaugural tournament was played in memory of late St. David's groundsman and grandfather of senior national team cricketer Lionel Cann.
