'Gades seal league title
Renegades Ladies 5
Teachers Ladies 1
Renegades have secured the Ladies' Rugby League title with a week still remaining in the season.
'Gades secured the trophy on the weekend with a comprehensive 5-1 victory against an out-of-form Teachers' squad.
From the opening whistle 'Gades attacked the Dragons in a ruthless, business-like fashion. Early scores by Amy Harvey, Melissa Field and Ruth Boo Leston gave Renegades a firm stranglehold on the game.
Teachers continued to fight and were awarded with a try from Chernelle Gibbons.
But two late tries from Katie Partington and Laura Haynes finished off any hope of a comeback and 'Gades walked away with a 5-1 win after a commanding display that reflected their total domination of the league play this year.
Renegades were consistently the best team on the Island with a perfect blend of skill and speed.
Police Ladies 5
Mariners Ladies 1
The game began quickly with an early try down the wing by Anna Knapman-Scott thanks to a tidy set-up by the wily Liz Copeland.
Galvanised by a good start, Police continued to pressure and a second try was secured by Robyn Bardgett who neatly stepped around a green defender to make her bid for the line.
Mariners rallied their defence against a fired-up Police team but could not stop the speedy Julia Mansfield rocketing around the edge to score a third try.
Mariners responded and made several valiant attempts on the Police defence but the girls in blue, who have shown strong defensive qualities as of late, kept them steadily in their own half of the pitch and finished off the half with a fourth try thanks to some nimble footwork from Kate Brown.
After a half-time pep chat from coach Conrad Hinchey, Police began where they left off. And the pressure paid dividends when a hovering Knapman-Scott took advantage of an offside call and made a determined breakaway to score her second try of the afternoon.
Mariners made some breaks for the try line only to be repeatedly shut down by Julia Mansfield in the sweeper position. Eventually newcomer Esther Madeiros squeaked over the line to put Mariners on the board.
But Police ran out worthy 5-1 victors.
