Giant-killing East Enders can go all the way says club chief
It’s been nearly half a century since the FA Cup last took up residence in St.George’s.
During the 1957-58 final, Maxwell Burgess’ Wellington Rovers defeated inaugural cup winners BAA 4-2 at the former National Sports Club in Devonshire.
Since then, however, the FA Cup has come nowhere close to making the trek across the Causeway. But that could all change if First Division giant-slayers St.George’s Colts have any say in the matter.
The East Enders sent out a chilling warning by comfortably ousting champions North Village from the prestigious competition in the quarter-finals. And they will now tackle four-time cup winners Devonshire Colts in the second FA Cup semi-final on April 15 at a venue yet to be determined.
While St.George’s’ shock victory over Village earlier this month would have surprised many, club sports chairman Kenny Foggo, who predicted his team would beat the Reds, never doubted the team’s ability.
“My bold prediction set the stage, Jah guided us to succeed and each player did their jobs and stayed committed to the task at hand,” Foggo said.
“Everyone attended church service (at Richard Allen AME) that morning and Jah reminded us that David did slay Goliath. And along with the entire congregation, he sent us out to go forth and conquer.
“That win has brought this community even closer. There’s such a huge buzz around St. George’s these days.”
Now the East Enders are on the verge of creating another big stir, that of becoming the first St.George’s club to appear in a FA Cup final since Rovers 49 years ago.
“Our guys realise that there is no ‘I’ in ‘Team’ and are committed to pulling together to get the job done. And I’ve known that we can play at this level because we have the players to do so,” Foggo said.
“It doesn’t matter who we meet in the semis because the secret is already out that St. George’s Colts can compete with the best. And our main focus has been on winning the FA Cup since coach (Carlos) Greaves took over.
“That’s what we’re attempting to accomplish, and the entire community of St. George’s is looking forward to seeing us playing on April 22 at the National Sports Centre.”
