I said to 'drop' batsmen, not 'sack' them
Dear Sir,
Please allow me to clarify a couple of points that I made in my last letter to Sports Mailbox. Some may view this as semantics but be that as it may, what will be will be.
Let me make categorically clear that at no time did I state that Irving Romaine and David Hemp be 'sacked' as captain and vice-captain of Bermuda's cricket team. What I did say was that based on their poor performances in the first three one-day games, if that form were to continue into the fourth game, played on Saturday, then both should be dropped and others in the touring party be given the opportunity to show what they can do. While they were out, obviously others would have to assume the roles of captaincy and vice-captaincy and as stated I feel Janeiro and Lionel are more than capable of doing the job.
Now in that fourth match Romaine top-scored with 61 not out, in Bermuda's innings so I have no problem with him continuing to play. Unfortunately Hemp failed in both the fourth and fifth games, in five innings at the crease, he has not made 30 runs. Therefore I believe he should be replaced and other batsmen be given an opportunity. It is patently unfair for others to sit on the bench while the sole 'professional' in the side be played match after match despite having a poor run of form.
I hope this will help to clarify my position to your many readers.
