l India have won 57.4% of their 55 matches in the World Cup — the fifth best win percentage in the competition.
l Sachin Tendulkar is the leading scorer in World Cup history (1,732 runs) and is one of only five batsmen to pass 1,000 World Cup runs after Javed Miandad, Aravinda de Silva, Viv Richards and Mark Waugh. He is also the only player to have scored 500 runs in a single World Cup (673 in 2003 and 523 in 1996).
l India’s 373-6 against Sri Lanka is the second highest score of all time and they were the first team to record a 10-wicket win in the competition when they defeated East Africa at Leeds, England in 1975.
l India are the only team to lose by one run in the history of the World Cup. They have in fact done it twice — against Australia in Chennai in 1987 and against Australia again in Brisbane in 1992.
l Mohammad Kaif’s four catches against Australia in Johannesburg in 2003 is a World Cup record for most catches in a match by a non-wicketkeeper.
l Sunil Gavaskar has played the slowest ever World Cup innings. Gavaskar scored 36 not out off 174 balls in India’s 132-3 in 60 overs in reply to England’s 334-4 in 60 overs.
l Kapil Dev and Syed Kirmani hold the partnership record for the ninth wicket (126) at Tumbridge Wells in England against Zimbabwe in 1983.
l Chetan Sharma was the first player in World Cup history to take a hat-trick (against New Zealand at Nagpur in 1987).
