Ireland batsman reprimanded

Ireland's opening batsman Chris Dougherty landed himself in hot water with world cricket's governing body during his team's 13th place play-off against Bermuda at the Under-19 World Cup in Malaysia yesterday.

The right-handed batsman was punished after breaching the International Cricket Council's code of conduct.

Dougherty pleaded guilty to charges of knocking over the stumps after being cleaned bowled by Bermuda skipper Rodney Trott and was given an official reprimand by match referee Mike Proctor for the Level One offence.

Top Bermuda umpire Roger Dill served as third umpire in the match and also took part in the player's hearing.

Explaining his decision, Emirates Elite Panel match referee Procter said: "No batsman likes getting out and I understand that Chris was upset and disappointed. But he must realise that it is necessary to control that disappointment.

"Knocking over the stumps with his bat in the way that he did is unacceptable behaviour and is not tolerated at any level of international cricket.

"This is Chris's first offence under the ICC Code of Conduct and so I am content to give him an official reprimand."

Earlier this week Bermuda all-rounder Chris Douglas was sent home for undisclosed disciplinary reasons while last week his team-mate Malachi Jones was also punished for an incident alleged to have occurred in the lead-up to the tournament in Malaysia.

"I am very disappointed that Chris' actions have led to him having to be removed from this tour," Bermuda Cricket Board (BCB) president Reggie Pearman stated. "Once the squad has returned and the executive committee has received full reports from the tour management a decision will be made whether or not any further action is required."
