Jamaican Ambassadors to visit on Island tour
Jamaican Ambassadors of America are scheduled to arrive in Bermuda this week to lecture school kids on the fundamentals of football, honour local personalities and face off against star-studded selects comprised of seasoned warriors from yesteryear.
The tourists, led by the charismatic Leonard (Chicken) Mason, are a team comprised of former Jamaican national players and Olympians.
In association with former West Ham striker Clyde Best and tour co-ordinator Eugene Joell, Jamaican Ambassadors plan to stage clinics at various schools and honour the likes of former PHC Zebras coach and president Leroy (Nibs) Lewis as well as former North Village twins Richard and Robert Calderon, school principals Evelyn Jones and Livingston Tuzo and Royal Gazette sports reporter Colin Thompson as outstanding Bermudians who have made valuable contributions in public service.
Past Bermuda Legend Award recipients include Hall of Famer Carlton (Pepe) Dill, Best, former national team captain Wendell (Joe) Trott and former Vasco sweeper Donavan (Blocker) Livingston.
The Jamaican Ambassadors are due on island tomorrow and meet Commercial outfit North Village Rams in their opening tour match at BAA Field on Thursday night (8 p.m.) before taking on a Cyril (Dago) Steede-led Over-40 eleven at the Den on Friday (8 p.m.) and Somerset Extros at Somerset Cricket Club on Saturday (3 p.m.), where the fifth annual Bermuda Legends Awards ceremony will be also be held.
Jamaican Ambassadors skipper and president Mason said he looks forward to forging even closer ties with some of the Island's former elite footballers.
"I think these guys are legends who need to be showcased at this level for the youngsters coming up to emulate," he said. "And this year our emphasis is really on giving kids a platform to build on in terms of planning for the future."
