Jones leads U19s one step closer to youth World Cup
Cayman Islands U19s 165 all out
Bermuda U19s 166 for 3
Bermuda Under-19s continued their march to Malaysia by sweeping aside the Cayman Islands in convincing fashion to take top spot in the Americas World Cup qualifying tournament in Toronto.
Today they will be gunning for their third victory in three days when they face Argentina ahead of their potentially pivotal encounter against much fancied Canada at the weekend.
Starlet Malachi Jones reinforced his growing reputation starring with both bat and ball, taking four for 38 and hitting a quick fire 41 not out as the Islanders cruised to Cayman Islands' target of 165.
Coach Andre Manders has now challenged his colts to improve their run-rate against whipping boys Argentina who were bowled out for just 64 against Canada yesterday.
"In the case of rain in our final game against Canada I've called for the players to improve our run-rate as it could prove decisive," he said. "At the moment our run-rate is very good and I'm delighted after another good result against the Cayman Islands - it was a job well done.
"They were on the back of a victory and had us in a bit of trouble at one stage when they built a good fourth-wicket partnership. But our strike bowlers Stefan Kelly and Malachi Jones got us out of trouble with some excellent bowling."
The colts had won the toss and elected to bowl and had the Caymans in a spot of bother slipping to 30 for three after 16 overs. But they clawed their way back and moved to 132 for four before Stefan Kelly, three for 13, and all-rounder Jones did the damage.
In reply Bermuda struggled initially losing two quick wickets before Rodney Trott steadied the ship with a captain's knock of 37 not out as they moved from 70 for two to 166 for three.
Bowler Dennico Hollis, who scored 76 not out against the Bahamas in Monday's victory, is a slight injury doubt.
To guarantee a place at next year's showpiece competition Bermuda must win all four of the regional qualifiers at the Maple Leaf Cricket Club, King City, Ontario, with only one country qualifying.
