Kavin wins by two miles

Kavin Smith had a lonely run as he covered the half marathon distance from St. George’s to Hamilton in the Bermuda Track and Field Association event opening up a winning margin of two miles by the time he crossed the finish line.

The 39-year-old was untroubled, running away from the race field within the opening strides of the race.

Even before he reached the first bend of the 13.1 mile race on Sunday morning he had opened up a sizeable chunk of daylight between himself and a chasing trio of Danny Kendall, Peter Mills and Simon Ashby.

The warm conditions proved no problem for Smith as he pushed through to a winning time of 1 hour 10 minutes 16 seconds.

In the women’s race May 24 Marathon Derby champion Dawn Richardson added another title to her growing list as she took sixth place overall in a well-paced effort that brought her home in around 1:29.

Peter Mills took the masters’ category prize for the men, while Terri Bossle won the women’s prize. In the senior masters’ Mike Osbourne, coming in home in a shade over 1:36 took the honours and Kim Mason did likewise in the corresponding women’s category.

The super seniors’ category, for those who have passed the age of 60, was a head-to-head between two famous names from Bermuda’s road running history, Michael Whalley and Giorgio Zanol. Scotsman Whalley won out coming home in around 1:40 to claim the spoils.
