Keane hat-trick puts leaders Onions into seventh heaven
Commercial League leaders MR Onions romped to a 7-0 win over Tuff Dogs on Saturday but Dandy Town Roots are hot on their heels after a narrow win against North Village Rams.
Onions took a first half lead through Eoghan O'Dwyer after a long run and finish to the keeper's near post and shortly afterwards Niall Baillie scored from close range after following up a Colin Keane effort which had been well saved. The action at the start of the second half was at the other end though, Greg Fraser making an excellent penalty save. From then on the Onions took control of the game, Baillie adding his second and Keane grabbing a hat-trick.
Goal of the game though came from Matt Ashfold, turning cleverly on the edge of the box before chipping the keeper.
The Dandy Town Roots narrowly defeated their cross-town rivals North Village Rams 2-1. Town went ahead after 30 minutes via a 30-yard cross from Cal Blankendal, which managed to deceive Rams keeper Ricky Hill. Village struck back through a text book header from Kentoine Jennings off a corner in the 40th minute.
The second half saw both teams play open and attractive attacking football. Roots took the lead when Jamel Smith passed a square ball on the edge of the Rams' 18-yard box. With Darren Simons rushing in the two NV defenders collided and Simons rounded Ricky Hill and scored the winner.
Robin Hood clawed out a tough 1-0 win against arch-rivals BAA. Hood started much the brighter and only good goalkeeping from Paul Nicholson kept the scores level. As the half wore on BAA gradually started to come more and more into it and should have taken the lead but good chances were squandered. Just before half-time Hood took the lead with a superb strike by Derek Stapely. BAA dug in after the break when Chris Worswick was sent off in the second half for foul language and even managed a late rally but could not salvage a point.
Key West Rangers got back to winning ways on Saturday with a 2-0 defeat of Lobster Pot courtesy of a Burton Cox penalty and a tap in from Fabiano Valadao in the first half. The second half was dominated by Rangers but again poor finishing from their strikers kept Pot in the game.
Valley notched a walk-over win against struggling Somerset Extros who couldn't muster a side.
In the B division Group One Boulevard hammered newcomers St. David's 8-0 while PHC picked up a walk-over win from Hamilton Parish who were found to be fielding unregistered players.
St. George's Allstars finally saw Commercial League action for the first time this season after previously experiencing a default victory and two consecutive byes, only to play out a 0-0 draw with Somerset Bridge Peskies. Second-half action saw the All-Stars put the home team under constant pressure and but for some glaring misses by stalwart striker Stevie Dickinson could have wrapped up the match comfortably.
In Group Two of the B Division Devonshire All-Stars beat Dockyard Falcons after a William Benjamin hat-trick, two from Arnold Todd and an own goal from Roger Williams. Terry Rogers got the Falcons goals. Devonshire Rec Lions stuffed Wolves 5-2 while MR Onions Real Men drew 1-1 with Pest Control who went ahead from a Jamie Matthews goal before Onions striker Andy Robinson fired in from long range. Winless Onions blew a number of late one-on-ones chances to grab all three points.
