Bermuda's Khano Smith and his New England team-mates made history in Dallas last night as they won a dramatic US Open Cup final to earn the Revolution their first ever major trophy.

Smith played the full 90 minutes on the left side of midfield for the Revs as they edged out a Dallas side backed by a home crowd at the Pizza Hut Park.

The former Dandy Town player enjoyed a hard-working, if unspectacular game, playing his part in defence as much as in attack.

Pat Noonan scored New England's first goal and set up the next two for Taylor Twellman and Wells Thompson as the Revs ended their streak of four successive defeats in finals.

Noonan's first goal came in the 21st minute. Midfielder Steve Ralston beat two defenders on the right side and sent a cross in front of the FC Dallas goal. Defender Adrian Serioux botched the attempted clearance and Noonan found the net from four yards out.

FC Dallas answered nine minutes later with the goal of the match, a bending shot from 22 yards, curled with the outside of his left foot by Arturo Alvarez. His effort struck the inside of the far post and ricocheted in.

Noonan was again in the centre of the action in the 41st minute. A Ralston corner kick flicked off Noonan's head and bounced off a defender to the far post, where Twellman volleyed home right-footed.

Noonan helped make it 3-1 in the 58th minute, back-heeling a Twellman pass to midfielder Thompson, who beat goalkeeper Dario Sala with a low, left-footed shot from close range.

Abe Thompson rounded out the scoring in the 64th minute just moments after entering the game as a Dallas substitute. Serioux's cross was headed by Clarence Goodson to an open Thompson, who emerged in a crowded penalty area to turn the ball in from eight yards out.

Smith has established himself in Steve Nicol's side this season and has chipped in with two MLS goals and six assists.

During the first half last night he whipped in two dangerous crosses, but both were cleared for corners by Dallas defenders. He also had one venomous crack at goal from some 30 yards out, which smacked opponent Alex Yi in the face so hard that it forced the defender to be substituted.

The midfielder joined his team-mates on a lap of honour after the trophy presentation, at one point celebrating with the large cup on his head.
