Khano buoyed by double strike in Mexico
An in-form Khano Smith might just be the tonic Bermuda need if they are to get past Cayman Islands in the Caribbean later this month.
The New England Revolution star sat out Bermuda's 1-1 World Cup first leg draw with the Caymans on home turf last month because of a groin injury, but recently bagged a brace in the Revs' 4-1 demolition of Pioneros de Cancun in Mexico to show signs he was fast rounding into top form.
National coach Keith Tucker makes it no secret he would love to have Smith's valued services at his disposal and has already hinted the former Dandy Town talisman "may be back" for Bermuda's clash with the Colorado Rapids this Friday at the National Sports Centre (NSC).
Smith, whose two goals in Mexico last week were his first since having groin surgery last December, is chomping at the bit to have a run out against Revs' MLS rivals Rapids in the familiar settings of the NSC, but has yet to be released by his club who toured Bermuda last month.
"If the Revs release me, I will play," Smith told The Royal Gazette.
Undoubtedly the Rapids will present a tough task for the Island's senior national team that went down to Smith's Revs 6-1 and 2-0 at the NSC last month.
But Smith believes no matter the outcome of the match, the exercise can only be of benefit to Bermuda's World Cup qualifying bid.
"It will be another good test for the team. Colorado is as good a team as any other team in the MLS," he said.
Bermuda can also expect to find their work cut out for them when they arrive in the Caymans later this month to tend to some unfinished World Cup qualifying business.
The two sides battled to a 1-1 draw at the NSC last month in the first leg. But Smith is confident the 'Gombey Warriors' can deliver the goods in the Caribbean and progress in the tournament.
And having shrugged off injury and seemingly rediscovered his goalscoring form, the lanky striker is looking forward to the clash.
"I feel we will beat Cayman," he declared. "My groin is feeling a lot better and it felt good to score in Mexico."
Smith is also pleased to see former national coach Kenny Thompson back on the national squad scene and is keen to meet newly installed technical director Derek Broadley.
"I'm delighted Kenny is back," he said. "I don't know much about the TD. But he has a good resume and I'm looking forward to meeting him."
