Bermuda's Khano Smith scored in the 88th minute to give New England Revolution a narrow Major League Soccer victory over Colorado Rapids at Gillette Stadium.

The win clinched at least second place in the Eastern Conference for Revs, and home field advantage in the MLS Cup Eastern Conference semi-finals, while Colorado fell deeper out of play-off contention with the defeat.

Smith's second goal of the year extended Rev's unbeaten streak to three games and pushed their home unbeaten streak against Colorado to seven matches.

Shalrie Joseph started the move, lofting a pass to Smith down the left wing. With two defenders converging, Smith pushed the ball past both and used his blistering pace to burst into the box where he poked the ball through Colorado goalkeeper Bouna Coundoul's legs from six yards out.

Smith said: "We've got match-winners all over the field, so if it wasn't me, I'm sure it would have been somebody else. It's time for us to get in our groove. We didn't play well, but its still a win.

"I could have used my right foot into the side of the net, I could have used the outside of my foot to the side of the net too. But I saw him (the keeper) coming out with his legs open. That's going to be pretty hard for him to stop with his legs open, so I tried to put it through his legs."
