Khano Smith's best season in Major League Soccer (MLS) just got better.

With victory over FC Dallas in the US Open Cup final at the Pizza Hut Park in Dallas on Wednesday night Smith and his New England Revolution team-mates celebrated the franchise's first major trophy.

The Revs capitalised on some sloppy defending before withstanding late pressure to finally break their cup final jinx and come away with the goods.

"They say winning is contagious and it becomes a habit," said Smith, speaking from Chicago yesterday.

"The monkey is now off our backs and hopefully we can go on and win a lot more trophies.

"This is definitely one of my best moments and hopefully there are more to come.

"We now know that we can win cup finals and so now we can focus on winning the MLS Cup, which has always been our goal.

"But it's about time we won something - and it feels good."

After the final whistle had blown, signalling the Revs' historic win, Smith and his team-mates saluted their loyal following who have stood by them through thick and thin.

"A lot of our fans are hard, working class people and they have shown us lots of love," the former Dandy Town striker said. "So we had to show some of that love back and that victory was for them.

"We took the trophy over to our small contigent of fans and celebrated with them - and they loved it!"

That the Revs triumphed 3-2 owed largely to Pat Noonan's opener and Taylor Twellman's crucial first-half strike that enabled the Revs to regain the lead just before the break.

But they didn't have things all their own way as hosts Dallas were determined not to go down without a fight.

"We were under pressure because they were playing at their home stadium and were really pushing," Smith said. "We were under the gun for the last third of the match - we just had to hang on."

By his own admission Smith - who saw his two-game scoring streak come to an end in Wednesday night's cup final - did not enjoy one of his better performances on the pitch.

"I thought everyone could've played a lot better. But sometimes playing away from home you do struggle," he said. "We didn't really play well at all but did enough to win.

"We scored an important goal before the half and another right after and that's when I thought we had wrapped it up. But they scored again right after us and so it was game on.

"But we weren't intimidated - we just had to get on with it."
