Khano Smith created one of New England Revolution's goals but could not prevent his team's two-game winning streak coming ending as they were beaten 4-2 by DC United at RFK Stadium.
The disappointing defeat allows DC United to extend not only their Eastern Conference lead over the Revs to four points, but also their overall MLS lead.
After United took a 1-0 lead in the 31st minute, the Revs broke through when Taylor Twellman volleyed Smith's cross past United goalkeeper Troy Perkins.
Heaps put the Revs ahead in the 54th minute, crashing in to poke the ball into the goal from a corner kick.
But nothing went right for the Revolution in the second half as they conceded three goals. Smith was substituted in the 70th minute.
