Khano Smith came on as a substitute in the 54th minute as the New England Revolution booked their place in the MLS Eastern Conference Championship game on Saturday thanks to a penalty-shoot out triumph over the Chicago Fire.

The Revs went into Saturday night’s game at the Gillette Stadium in Massachusetts trailing 1-0 after losing the first leg away from home.

But goals from Taylor Twellman and Matt Noonan after going behind again in the first half brought the aggregate’s level after extra time — with the Boston-based team winning the subsequent shootout 4-2.

Playing on his favoured left side, Smith replaced Jeff Larentowicz early in the second half as Revs coach Steve Nicol looked for some extra attacking thrust.

And the Bermudian international responded to his coach’s wishes, proving a constant menace with his pace and movement and forcing a superb save out of Fire ‘keeper Matt Pickens in the first half of injury time.
