Kids get a kick out of football extravaganza

Somerset's under-nine team celebrate their victory over Dandy Town in Saturday's tournament at the National Sports Centre.

Somerset Trojans won two of the three age groups at the Pee-Wee Youth Extravaganza held by local fraternity Kappa Alpha Psi at the National Sports Centre (NSC) on Saturday.

Trojans, who came agonisingly close to carrying all three titles back west, lost the under-11age group final to North Village.

Yet victories over Hamilton Parish in the under-sevens and Dandy Town on penalties in the under-nines saw Somerset's youngsters steal the show.

The day, which focused on young players having fun rather than winning, went off without a hitch according to Kappa member Troy Harvey.

"There was great family support for all the youth that showcased their skills," said Harvey. "In my estimation there was a good few thousand people who came through the gates.

"It was roughly 12 hours of football, so it was very exciting for the kids."

Helped by volunteers and sponsors to get the event up and running, Harvey acknowledged the effort of those who assissted in various ways.

"I would like to thank those who helped us with the event," he said. "Our sponsors and volunteers did a marvellous job with the parts they played, and my hat comes off to them.

"We have a few thoughts on upcoming events we would like to put on for the youth in the near future, so our organisation will take a look at these ideas and see what we will do next."
