Last chance for race hopefuls
Runners hoping to compete in this Sunday's 10th annual PartnerRe Women's 5K have only until later today to enter.
Entry forms for the October 14 female-only event are available at Sportseller in the Washington Mall or runners can enter online at www.partnerre5k.bm. Deadline for entries is 4:30 p.m.
Many of the Island's top female runners, including Victoria Fiddick, Kim and Deanna McMullen, Anna Eatherley, Kelly Larrett and Rosa Peichoto have indicated they will compete in the 5K race as well as last weekend's Bank of Bermuda Triathlon winner Julia Hawley.
However, course record-holder Ashley Couper has indicated that she will not be on the start line.
As well as the 5K race, the event offers a competitive 5K walk and a 5K fun walk for women as well as a 3.2K race for under-16 girls.
The junior race gets underway at 8.30 a.m. from the Botanical Gardens followed by the adult events at 9 a.m.
More than $10,000 worth of prizes, including draw prizes, are up for grabs. A corporate trophy will go to the company with the most employees finishing while the school with the most participants will win a $500 cash gift, dedicated to sports programmes and equipment.
Organisers are predicting a record turnout of 1,000-plus participants if the trend of past years continues.
Last year a record 840 women and girls finished the popular charity event, which has raised more than $120,000 for female-related causes since 1998. All proceeds this year will go to Bermuda Cancer & Health Centre's new digital mammography screening equipment.
Late entries, at a higher fee of $35 for adults, will be allowed at registration on Saturday, the day before the race, at the Jack King (Poultry) Building in the Botanical Gardens. There, entrants can also collect their numbers, gift bags and T-shirts. Juniors can also enter that day for $5. There will be no late entries allowed on race morning.
The race is presented by Mid-Atlantic Athletic Club (MAAC) and sponsored by PartnerRe Ltd.
