Last Fight Night at Number One Shed

Number One Shed Knockdown will happen this Saturday and there will be ringside seats for many.

It may not be the actual demolition of the cruise ship terminal, although that will happen in the near future, but his knockdown event is the final Fight Night to be staged at the venue on Front Street.

A total of 26 boxers, from first-timers to more seasoned fighters and four boxers travelling from Toronto, will be seeking to knockdown their opponent or at the very least out-point them.

What started in the 1990s as an opportunity for a few rugby players to bare savage frustration against their rugby field adversaries without risking being sin-binned, is now a mainstay on Bermuda's sporting calendar.

This will be the 10th Fight Night - and the last to be staged at the cavernous Number One Shed.

Anyone looking for a likely winner might want to pick rugby player Tom Healy who has four wins and no losses to his career record. Almost as bankable is Mark Dunlop who has a 4-1 record.

The fight card also features fresh faces, including teenagers Nikki Bascombe and Andre Landy who face one another, and Juliana d'estelle Roe and Melissa DaPonte who will square up against each other during the second half of the evening.

Matchmaker Nir Sadeh has been involved in putting on Fight Night during the past 10 years and is urging fight fans to get their tickets for this Saturday's event by Friday as they will not be available on the night. Last year 1,500 people watched the action.

"It's a mix of first timers; accountants, fund managers, 'suits', construction workers and rugby players. Everyone has done basic boxing training in a gym," said Mr. Sadeh.

The fights are three rounds of two minutes, except for the women's fight which is one-minute rounds.

With Number One shed scheduled to be pulled down soon, the future location of Fight Night has yet to be decided upon. For now fight fans have one last opportunity to enjoy the action in the favourite venue.

Mr. Sadeh said: "We are paying tribute to the shed, it has been good to us and this is the last Fight Night we'll have there."

The Bermuda public has traditionally followed local boxing events keenly, and the Island's only Olympic medal was won in the boxing ring by Clarence Hill who took bronze at the 1976 Montreal Games.

"There has always been a demand for this sport in Bermuda. People know the boxers in the ring - perhaps as a colleague, or a neighbour," said Mr. Sadeh, who is predicting sparks to fly between the top four fighters on the card.

Tickets for Fight Night can be bought at Arcade Barber Shop, C-Mart, Pro-Shop and Sports R Us.
