Learning experience for new recruit Lonsdale
It wasn't exactly the start to an international career teenaged off spinner Chris Lonsdale might have hoped for.
Yet not even an eight-wicket thrashing or yesterday's miserable overcast conditions could dampen the spirits of the 19-year-old Manchester University student who arrived in Amsterdam to provide relief for Bermuda's depleted senior national team.
The youngster failed to take a wicket on his Bermuda debut, however, but hung around the crease long enough to stall Dutch celebrations during a nine -run tenth-wicket stand with Dwayne Leverock.
"He (Leverock) taught me a few things today. I was fairly pleased with my batting, but thought I could've done better with the ball," said Lonsdale, who has represented Nottinghamshire County at all youth levels from Under-11 to Under-19. Lonsdale is the nephew of former Southampton Rangers cricketer David Lonsdale and son of Notts County general practitioner Richard Lonsdale who was born in Bermuda.
The young off spinner again showed his enormous potential by bagging 36 scalps in 15 matches representing Loughborough Grammar School last season.
"I was confident bowling until I realised the level of batsmen I was bowling to. But it was just a learning curve and certainly worth the trip. And I would like to do it again and remain heavily involved with the team," he added.
Lonsdale has yet to make a career choice, but hasn't ruled out the possibility of pursuing a professional career in the sport back in the UK.
"I would like to take my cricket further. It will be difficult, but I love cricket and really enjoy it and will play at whatever level I aspire to," he said.
With better field placings, Lonsdale might easily have collected his first scalp in a Bermuda jersey.
"I'm bowling fairly consistently but I still need to work on a few things like my speed ¿ but it's all a learning curve," he said.
He also showed he can swing the bat.
"I was a bit nervous," he smiled. "But I really enjoy batting and it was good to get behind the ball. Batting isn't my strength, but at least I tried my best."
Lonsdale will not be travelling with the team to Ireland for their next match.
