Maiden 20-20 league set for explosive start
Bermuda's new 20-20 league kicks-off today with all 16 of the Island's clubs set to do battle in the crash bang format of cricket.
The shorter version of the game, which is quickly growing in popularity around the world, is sure to bring excitement to cricket fans throughout Bermuda.
East, East Central, West and West Central zone teams will play today and tomorrow in a round-robin format, with the four zone winners advancing to the final at the National Sports Centre (NSC) on May 4.
The Eastern zone consists of St. David's, Bailey's Bay, St. George's and Cleveland at St.David's Cricket Club, while the Eastern Central zone includes Devonshire Rec., Flatts, Police and Young Men's Social Club, with games played at the NSC.
In the Western zone Somerset will battle it out with Somerset Bridge, Willow Cuts and Southampton Rangers at Somerset Cricket Club, while the Western Central zone will be Warwick, Leg Trappers, PHC and Western Stars at Southampton Oval.
Premier Division new boys, Devonshire Rec., who have bolstered their squad with Mackie Crane, Allan Douglas, Wilbur Burt and Steven Bremar will have their work cut out in arguably the toughest group.
"It is nice to be in a group of this calibre as it will give us a chance to compete against some of the favorites for the one-day title this year," said Devonshire coach Ricardo Brangman Sr.
"The key to playing 20/20 is teamwork; you must what the situation is at all times. Everyone has to pull together for this version of the game.
"But it is nice that the BCB has started this league as it gives Bermuda's players a chance to play the game instead of watching it on television.
"It gives the players an opportunity to know what it is really about."
With the one-day and open schedules on the horizon, Brangman does not feel any psychological advantages will be gained from the 20/20 league.
"There won't be an advantages gained as 20/20 is more if a slugging game with excitement, opposed to the longer versions of the game which require patience and more strategy," he said.
"But we are in a very competitive group and are looking forward to going out there and having some fun."
