Mountain bike series targets youngsters
Bermuda Bicycle Association, in conjunction with Tokio Millenium Re, will hold the first of four mountain bike races tomorrow, starting at the Arboretum at 4 p.m..
Organised by long-time junior triathlon coach Neil de ste Croix, Francis Patton School physical education teacher Garth Thomson and BBA treasurer Ed Jordan, the series is designed to encourage all primary school students to try off-road cycling.
De ste Croix commented: “It is an opportunity for our primary level children to come out and experience the fun of cycling in a safe and controlled environment.”
The course will be marshalled not only by staff from the Tokio Millenium office in Bermuda but also by some of Bermuda’s premier cyclists who will be on hand to provide assistance and advice to the young riders.
Thomson added: “All the courses have been designed to ensure that the participants get a safe and enjoyable experience. The competitors will be split into three groups — five and six years-old, seven and eight years-old and nine and ten years-old.”
Every participant will receive a number plate with the number “one” embossed as well as a water bottle and finisher’s medal. Refreshments will be provided by Barritts.
