Mourinho is confident that Lampard will stay at Chelsea

LONDON (AP) — Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is confident midfielder Frank Lampard will stay at the club for a long time.

"I want him to stay beyond two years," Mourinho said on Friday. "I see no difference between the Lampard I met when I arrived four years ago and the Lampard I have here now."

Lampard has two years left on his current deal but wants to postpone negotiations over renewing it until the end of this season.

"I've told the club I don't really want to get involved in negotiations which aren't going to end well while I'm playing football," Lampard said on Thursday. "I hope it gets sorted and that it gets sorted soon, at the end of the season, or the next time we talk.

"The club know my intentions, and it's certainly not a money issue."

Last month Chelsea and England captain John Terry signed a new five-year contract through 2012.

LONDON (AP) — Centreback William Gallas will captain Arsenal this season.

"I feel centreback is always the best position to lead on the pitch, and it is Gallas who has more experience at the back," Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said on Thursday.

Arsenal's captain for the past two seasons was France striker Thierry Henry who joined Barcelona this off-season.

Gallas joined from Chelsea in 2006 as part of a transfer that saw Ashley Cole move in the opposite direction.

In July, the France defender criticised Arsenal's transfer policy for this offseason.

"What is sure is that several players are questioning the club's future," Gallas said. "Around us teams are recruiting, but what is planned to compensate for the departure of Thierry Henry?

"Today I am an Arsenal player, but I do not know what can occur tomorrow."

WOLVERHAMPTON, England (AP) — Building magnate Steve Morgan completed his takeover of Wolverhampton Wanderers on Thursday.

While George Gillett and Tom Hicks paid $431 million for Liverpool and Malcolm Glazer bought Manchester United for $1.47 billion, Morgan handed over just $20 for Wolves.

Morgan has also promised a direct investment into the club of $60.5 million.

Wolves have been up for sale for four years, but previous owner Jack Hayward refused to do business with foreign investors.

"If foreigners had come in with exactly the same money as Steve I wouldn't have sold," Hayward said. "The way the clubs are going into foreign hands is very bad indeed."

Hayward bought Wolves in 1990 for $4 million. Since then, he has invested $100 million in the club.

He will stay at the club as life president and his grandson, Rupert Hayward, has joined the board.

Morgan formed family homes company Redrow in 1974, and has cashed in shares worth $399 million in the firm. He has a reported fortune of $629 million. He is a lifelong Liverpool supporter, and in 2004 tried unsuccessfully to buy the club.
