Mukuddem's fury at rivals failure to replay
An outraged Saleem Mukuddem is calling for Leg Trappers' promotion rivals Devonshire Rec. to honour a gentleman's agreement to replay an abandoned match, after the Bermuda Cricket Board handed them the victory.
On Thursday the BCB awarded tabletopping DRC the maximum two points from last month's fixture at the Sea Breeze Oval, which was called off after the pitch had not been prepared by Bailey's Bay on behalf of Leg Trappers, the home team.
Even if both teams win their remaining fixture tomorrow then Trappers would still miss out by one point on their first-ever promotion, to hand Rec. top-flight cricket alongside Police.
According to Mukuddem, DRC's officials had agreed an attempt should be made to reschedule the game, only for scorer Michael Glasford to write to the BCB to request the visitors were given the precious points.
"On the morning of the game, after it was agreed that the wicket was not playable due to Bailey's Bay groundsman not preparing it, it was agreed with the DRC coach Ricardo Brangman Snr and skipper Dean Stephens that we would attempt to re-schedule the game," said the former World Cup player.
"This agreement though contrary to BCB policy (BCB Executives do have discretionary rights to allow rescheduled games as stated by their Bye Laws) showed great sportsmanship and honour by DRC and seemed like a good idea since this Saturday and next weekend are free days for First Division teams.
"The DRC coach followed up this agreement with a call to the BCB the next day and requested they reschedule the game. Unbeknownst to everyone the scorekeeper of DRC Michael Glasford had written to the BCB requesting they be awarded the points.
"Nothing prevented him from doing this but I thought this was very unsportsmanlike, very dishonorable and unscrupulous. Is this the example DRC wants to set for its youth, by getting promoted without playing."
Due to concerns over Bailey's Bay's preparation of pitches, Leg Trappers opted to play last weekend's match against Police at Police Field despite being the home team.
And Mukuddem believes in the "interests of cricket" DRC should request that the BCB allow both teams to compete for the points should they prove pivotal in influencing the promotion outcome.
"Surely it's in the interests of cricket for this fixture to be rescheduled - it's commonsense and the decent thing to do.
"Both teams have one game left and should one of us lose then the BCB's decision would be irrelevant. But should we both win Leg Trappers would miss out on their first ever promotion to the Premier League because of this decision.
"Why did it take three weeks for the BCB to make a decision before the final round of matches? We took it in good faith that Bailey's Bay would prepare the pitch properly as that's what we pay them a weekly fee for.
"Bermudians are well known to never step down from a challenge and I hope DRC will put pressure on the BCB to fulfill this fixture."
When contacted by The Royal Gazette, Glasford said "rules are rules" in reference to his decision to request the points were awarded to DRC.
