National team to take on Chelsea reserves in World Cup warm-up

Andriy Shevchenko Chelsea's Ukranian star, who has spent much of this season playing for the reserves, could be in the line-up when a Blues team take on Bermuda's national side early next month.

Bermuda's national football team will be treated to the full 'Premiership experience' with a training camp at Fulham FC before a glamour game against Chelsea's second string.

The special training tour to London represents a massive coup for Bermuda Football Association (BFA) and is a statement of intent ahead of their World Cup qualifiers against Trinidad and Tobago in June.

An 18-man squad jets off to the capital next Sunday (April 27) and will return on Friday (May 2).

BFA Technical director Derek Broadley, who called upon his top Premiership contacts to arrange the trip, believes the clash against the Blues reserves will be "one to remember for years to come" for the players involved.

"I'd imagine there hasn't been many times our players would have had the opportunity to play against this level of competition," said Broadley. "If a well-known Chelsea player is involved then it will be one to tell the grandchildren.

"Chelsea have stipulated that they are free to pick from their academy and reserve team squads for the match. And any player who is not involved in their first team could play in this match.

"I think the whole experience will be a big boost for the players as they will be training at top quality facilities."

Broadley's former Crystal Palace colleague, Vic Bettinelli, now at Fulham, was the catalyst in organising the Chelsea match and will also be putting Bermuda's goalkeepers through their paces during their three-day stay at the Cottagers training ground.

Bettinelli, who has previously worked with Manchester United 'keeper Edwin van der Sar, is already familiar with Bermudian football having staged on-Island coaching clinics alongside Broadley last summer.

"I spoke to a few former colleagues and requested for them to help us out," Broadley said. "They were very generous in allowing us to train at their (Fulham's) facilities. Vic Bettinelli was the key component in arranging the game against Chelsea.

"Our own staff will take the training and I'd like Vic to do some work with our goalkeepers."

Broadley said Fulham's state-of-the-art facilities and equipment would enable the Gombey Warriors' coaching staff to gather a wealth of statistical information on their players.

"For us, the game (against Chelsea reserves) is a chance to gain access to some stats against quality opposition. Fulham's facilities will enable us to gain those stats, such as how far players run during a game and how many times they give away the ball. The stats will give us a base level of where our players are at."

The training camp has also received the backing from Bermuda Hogges with Broadley reiterating his desire for the BFA and the USL-D2 franchise to strike up a close working relationship.

None of Hogges' upcoming fixtures will be affected by the trip.

"I met with representatives with the Hogges and it was all agreed," he said. "Some of the Hogges players will be involved and the best team available will go. I think this trip will be a great opportunity for the players."

Bermuda face Chelsea reserves at their multi-million dollar training facility on Thursday, May 1, the day after the senior team meet Liverpool in the second leg of their Champions League semi-final.
