Onions edge five-goal thriller to extend lead

MR Onions opened up a five-point lead at the top of Commercial A with a hard-earned win over North Village.

Onions opened the scoring when Colin Keane instinctively prodded home from close range after a corner had been headed into his path.

But it was North Village who led at the break, clawing their way back into the game with a goal direct from a free kick and then taking the lead with a rasping shot from the edge of the box after a corner routine had caught the Onions' defence napping.

With the Onions seeming to run out of ideas in the second half, Niall Baillie pulled them level with an outrageous strike. Controlling a loose ball 40 yards out he spotted the keeper off his line and audaciously lobbed him, the ball bouncing once then into the roof of the net. Buoyed by the equaliser, the visitors took the lead shortly afterwards, Baillie again, scoring from a low Matt Ashfold cross. The Rams rallied and even rattled the crossbar but Onions held firm.

Dandy Town Roots moved back into second place with a rugged performance against Robin Hood. Roots started the match brightly and took the lead when Michael Wells' defence-splitting pass found Darron Simons who slotted home.

Hood equalised minutes later from a set piece when David Outerbridge was unmarked at the back post and expertly headed in. Roots stepped up the tempo and took the lead when Wells capitalised on a weak back pass and comfortably lobbed the advancing keeper. Roots increased their lead when Simons struck again late in the half.

After the break Hood finally broke through the defence from another set-piece as Kenny Burns was allowed time to turn inside the box and send a rasping drive that creeped in the far post.

Valley walloped Lobster Pot 5-1. Craig Darrell opened the scoring with a free kick and Al Thomas slipped the defence to net before Pot hit back through Shohab Mehran. Thomas then completed his hat-trick with two headed goals from corners before Valley sealed their win with a penalty.

A Darran Xuereb goal was enough to give Tuff Dogs victory over Somerset Extros while BAA beat Key West Rangers 2-0 with goals from Martin Jones and Paul Colvin, while BAA's Sean Hill was sent off.

In Commercial B action St. George's All-Stars returned to winning ways with a convincing 6-2 victory over cross-town rivals St. David's. All-Stars raced to a comfortable 4-0 first-half lead thanks to two goals by Casey Burgess and further strikes from Charles Wade and Lionel Cann.

St. David's scored twice in a spirited second half, however the home team maintained its dominance with prolific scorer Cann adding two more to his tally to complete his hat-trick.

What was to be a top-of-the-table clash turned out to be a one-sided affair as PHC Raiders gave Boulevard an 11-0 thrashing. Craig Critchlow opened the account, Sheridan (Baldy) Ming made it two. Keith Bell added another as his low drive from the left beat keeper hands down to make it 3-0. Ming got his second with a well taken goal to make it 4-0. Critchlow added his second with a well struck ball, making it 5-0. Critchlow unleashed again to cap off his hat-trick just before the half, making it 6-0 at the break.

The second half saw much of the same as Ming got his hat-trick, making it 7-0. Substitute Eddy Dowling got his name on the score sheet after some hard running making it 8-0. Boulevard put up some fight as they went in search of their first but Raiders keeper Cal Waldron made save after save. Waldron stopped two breakaways, palmed shots away and seem to always be in the right place at the right time to keep his shut-out alive.

The energetic Dowling got his second after fighting off tackles and put ball in back of the net making it 9-0. Ming tapped in his fourth to make it 10. Eddy Dowling wanted to join the hat-trick club with Ming and Critchlow, so he completed his hat-trick to make the final score 11-0.

Vasco, who have been struggling for numbers this season, were unable to field a side against Somerset Bridge Peskies.

In B Division Group Two action Prospect/Fire remain top after finally overcoming mid-table MR Onions Real Men who twice surrendered a lead and eventually went down 3-2. Onions full-back Dirk Evelyn bundled home in the first 10 minutes only for Kevin Mooney to equalise two minutes later.

Onions' Jon Betts finished off a fine move to put his side ahead again but Kingsley Mundy latched on to a fine through-ball to level things before the break. Allan Miguel fired home the winner 10 minutes into the second half from range after Onions lost possession just outside their box.

Devonshire Lions beat local rivals Devonshire All-Stars 5-2 in a game which saw All-Stars players Larry Benjamin and Ray Jones sent off. Shawn Showers got two for Lions with Wali Salaam, Preston Mallory and Shavaughn Smith also netting while Germano Bothelho and Ray Jones scored for All-Stars.

Pest Control got the better of a 10-goal thriller at Dockyard Falcons. A Jamie Matthews brace and strikes from Noel Edness, Shane Hollis, Troy Crockwell and Donte Foley handed Pest Control a 6-4 win. Dwayne DeRosa grabbed two for Falcons, for whom Kyle Paul and Levar Powell were also on target.
