Onions face Roots in top of the table clash

The scene is set for Saturday's top of the table clash between Commercial A leader MR Onions and second-placed Dandy Town after Onions again dropped points at the weekend.

Onions, dumped out of the Commercial Cup in midweek, failed to beat ten-man BAA on Saturday on an awful BAA surface.

Fielding a depleted side, Onions took the lead early on when BAA's injured keeper Tony Ward lost the flight of the ball in the sun and Rael Coen coolly finished from six yards.

The early setback unsettled the BAA rearguard and Onions pushed for a second with Eoghan O'Dwyer looking particularly dangerous.

BAA eventually got to grips with the game and started to dominate as the half was drawing to an end with Pete Coleman equalizing with a superb diving header at the back post to leave the score at 1-1 at half time.

Wanderers started the second half with belief that they could be the first team to beat Onions in the league and were inches from taking the lead when a superb Brendan Shevlin freekick from 30 yards hit the underside of the MRs bar and bounced out to safety.

BAA continued to look the more likely winner until midway through the second half they were reduced to ten men when Adam Shaw was sent off for petulantly kicking out at an Onions player.

Onions pushed forward with injured top scorer Colin Keane coming off the bench however the BAA defence stood firm under pressure for the last 20 minutes and the score finished 1-1.

Meanwhile second-placed Dandy Town Roots ran riot over a helpless Somerset Extros at St. John's field with an 8-1 drubbing. Four goals were scored either side of the half as the Roots recorded their biggest win of the season. Roots ran at Extros from the outset but were made to wait for their opening goal as Extros resistance was strong. However, once Darron Simons finished off a move down the left it was no turning back. Extros made the game interesting when they equalized almost immediately when the Roots keeper failed to hold onto a header following a free kick and the rebound was tapped into the open net by the onrushing striker. Roots regained composure and doubled their lead when Adam Outerbridge planted a diving header past the keeper. Kevin Hurdle hammered home the third after a break away and Simons scored his second shortly before the interval.

The second half saw the Roots take full control and increased their lead through Sean Smith, another from Outerbridge, Shennon Gilbert and Lloyd Christopher.

Tuff Dogs are finally finding some form at the right time of the season. After booking their place in the Commercial Cup Final with a midweek win over BAA, Dogs hammered Valley 9-1 in a real relegation six-pointer.

Lovintz Tota got a hat-trick while Jamel Lovell and Reed Gaglio both got two each while Robbie Almeida and Darren Xereub both got one apiece.
