Onions hit seven as Goater scores brace for Rams

Two games into the season MR Onions are ahead on goal difference in the Commercial A division after beating promoted Somerset Extros 7-2.

Onions racked up an early lead thanks to Nick Briggs and Colin Keane, before Extros halved the deficit with a well-struck shot by David Burchall from distance following a quick free kick. Two more goals from veteran striker Briggs saw him complete a first-half hat-trick and the visitors go in 4-1 up, but a combination of profligate finishing and good goalkeeping preventing them from extending the lead further.

Extros hinted at a comeback by scoring first in the second half with a close-range finish. But at the other end Keane added a further two to seal the game and match his strike partner's first-half feat; his goals sandwiched around a fine Nigel Forrester effort.

North Village Rams, who boast ex-Manchester City legend Shaun Goater and former Bermuda national Kentoine Jennings, could be the team to beat this season.

They cruised to a 6-3 victory over BAA with Goater bagging two and Jennings, Maceo Dill, and Stephen Coddington all notching from close range. BAA's solitary reply in the first half came courtesy of a speculative Bruce Hadden strike from distance. BAA got stuck in after the break and Paul Colvin helped himself to a brace courtesy of a diving header and close range finish before a late own goal extinguished any faint BAA hopes of a comeback.

Key West lie third after beating Tuff Dogs 5-1 in game which kicked off at a frantic pace, and saw Sergio Griffin slam home a poor clearance in the opening minutes. Ricky Mallory made it 2-0 on 20 minutes with a sweet volley from 25 yards.

Tuff Dogs pulled one back from the spot early in the second half but their revival was short lived as Jahmahl Mills restored Key West's two-goal advantage with a close range finish. Further goals from Griffin and another long-range finish from Mills completed the scoring for Rangers as the Dogs were left panting in the heat.

Lobster Pot and Dandy Town Roots drew 1-1, with Roots opening the scoring in the first half when Darron Simons headed home from close range after the Roots had opened up Pot's defence and midfielder Don Lewis crossed perfectly for Simons.

The game was held up for almost half an hour when Lobster Pot striker Dave Allison broke his leg in two places. Pot scored with two minutes remaining when Ken Mahadeo volleyed in from a set piece to earn a well-deserved point.

Valley and Robin Hood also shared the spoils as Hood's Steven Simons cancelled out a first-half MacDonald Simmons strike.

In Commercial B Group One, Vasco Mariners beat newcomers St. David's 3-1. Ricardo Arruda scored with a header from a corner early on but St. David's came back and scored with a header of their own, later in the half. Joe Barroso lobbed the keeper after beating the offside trap just before the break, while Arruda claimed his second in the dying minutes of the game.

St. George's All-Stars picked up a walk-over against Hamilton Parish while Boulevard's Michael Pond earned his side a point after Timmy Telford had fired in a first-half goal for Somerset Bridge Peskies.

In Group Two, Pest Control beat Wolves 6-3 with the pacy Jamie Matthews firing in an excellent hat-trick inside the first 30 minutes. A Kareem Hollis strike gave Pest Control a 4-0 half-time lead. Wolves regrouped to score three times in the second half through Shannon Tuzo (two) and Keith DeShields, but a fine long-range shot from the right wing by Hollis and a Henry Young penalty gave Pest Control a 6-3 victory.

Devonshire All-Stars beat B Division newcomers MR Onions Real Men. Onions edged a lethargic first half with a neat individual goal by Stevie Nowell who chipped the keeper. But All-Stars beat a tiring Onions with two virtually identical late goals from William Benjamin and Harrison Trott, who latched onto through balls which split the home defence.

Meanwhile a revamped Prospect/Fire, which has pulled in some top players in preparation for an international competition, could well be the form side this year. They beat Dockyard Falcons 5-2 with a Alvin Baker brace, and further goals from Kingsley Mundy, Kevin Mooney and Steven Robinson.
