Opponents are unknown quantity for Hogges

Bermuda Hogges head into this weekend's match against the Pittsburgh Riverhounds trying to build on their impressive home win over the Wilmington Hammerheads.

The Riverhounds, who are new faces to the USL Division Two, have only one point from four games and are somewhat of an unknown quantity to the Islander's.

But this will not bring about complacency or lack of respect for the opposition.

"We went through this last year as we were the new boys on the block," said Hogges manager Kyle Lightbourne. "But as long as we play our game we will be ok.

"They have a game tonight (last night), and then travel to the Island today, so we might have an advantage as they may be fatigued a little."

The Hogges, having rebounded from the 6-0 drubbing in the season opener at the hands of the Charlotte Eagles, are looking to make the NSC a fortress this season, and the Riverhounds seem to be the perfect side to emphasis this point against.

"We want teams that come to the Island to be wary that this is not last season. You can't come here to our home and beat up on us like they did last year.

"We are looking for consistency at home. If we can do this, we can be competitive in the league and end up in a mid to high position in the standings at the end of the season.

With the majority of the Hogges players travelling to the UK with the national team in recent weeks, players have had extra time to gel and know each other's game.

The Hogges currently lie seventh in the Division Two, having played two matches, and recorded their first win two weeks ago against Wilmington.

Defender Kevin Richards knows his team-mates are ready to turn their training and belief into results.

"We want to make the national stadium a fortress this season and make teams fear coming to Bermuda to play," said Richards. "Starting the season with back-to-back wins at home is the best way to do that.

"The pitches here are faster and that allows us to play our preferred fluid football and pass through our opponents, but we saw in our last game that the conditions may not be perfect and we also need to be willing to play ugly and grind down our opponents."

And with the home crowd at their back, Richards knows that the Hogges must take full advantage of this.

"The crowd was great last game, we have a core group of supporters who are behind us throughout the entire game. The more people who come out to support the Hogges, the better our chances will be of winning.

"The last match was a very good result, but we have to stay grounded and move on to Saturday's game and give the fans another professional performance.

"All the USL teams make you battle and earn the right to be on the pitch.

"Although we don't know if they'll be as good as the big 3 in the division, we know they will battle and make us work for every inch.

After the Hogges last outing, the Island's professional outfit can boast two players in last week's USL-D2 team of the week.

"I think it's great for the players and the team. It's always good to be recognized for good performances and Kwame(Steede) and Stevie(Astwood) are both dynamic players who won the game for us against Wilmington. It's great that they are notching goals and playing well this early in the campaign."

The Bermuda Hogges take to the field against the Pittsburgh Riverhounds at the NSC on Saturday, with kick-off at 7 pm.
