Paralympians visit Island for special event

The Bermuda Paralympics Association is currently holding their first Adaptive Sports Expo at the WindReach Recreational Village, which runs through until tomorrow.

The Expo will allow people to meet and greet international paralympic athletes and coaches such as gold medallist swimmer Elisabeth Walker and sailor Shelley Gaulter to name but a few.

Special guest for the occasion is Jonquil Solt, Chairman of the FEI International Para Equestrian Committee.

There will also be demonstrations in disciplines such as Basketball, Equestrian, and Tennis along with other sports.

"Judging from the first morning session, especially for the people who have special needs, it has been a great opportunity," said WindReach executive director LanceFurbert.

"The biggest sports thus far have been Boccia and Curling as it is something that all can participate in."

"This is something that will give them not only a sporting outlet but also a chance to start social bonds that can very well remain with them for a lifetime, which is also important.

"It is vital that people who have special needs get exercise and improve their physical health, so it is a weekend that can also be a learning process for some."
