Police and Somerset Cricket Club off to winning ways

Police Recreation Club and Somerset Cricket Club have all but booked their place in the semi-finals of the 20/20 tournament after both recorded two victories over the weekend to leave them on top of their respective zones.

The tournament got underway on Saturday and Sunday to launch Bermuda's new cricket season.

Police recorded victories over Flatts and Young Men's Social Club, while Somerset got off to a flying start with wins over Willow Cuts and Somerset Bridge.

Yesterday's match at the National Sports Centre between Police and Flatts proved to be a close affair with both clubs intent on winning the Eastern Central zone.

But it was the boys in blue who came out on top.

Flatts, who batted first, were coasting after seeing off Police's new opening attack of George O'Brien jr and Treddie Simpson without losing a wicket, with 66 runs on the board.

But when the first wicket fell, it sparked a domino effect that saw the team finish with a respectable, but reachable, total of 132 of seven from their allotted overs.

This might have been enough as a tight opening spell from Flatts' two opening bowlers kept the Police openers at bay.

However, victory was not to be as Gavin Aparicio (62) and James Celestine (27) went about pushing their side towards the target with quick singles.

In the end, those singles were the key as Police made it safely home with overs in hand, finishing on 135 four four.

At Somerset Cricket Club yesterday, the home side made 129 from their overs while Willow Cuts fell 18 short, posting 111.

On Saturday at the same venue, Somerset won by a massive 146 runs after batting first and scoring 209 for six. Azeem Pitcher top scored with 75.

In reply, Somerset Bridge could only muster a meagre 63 with Kirk Simons and Adrian Burrows both scoring 12.

Jordan DeSilva took four wickets for 16 in four overs.
