Premier Division race going down to the wire

The battle for supremacy in shaping up to be a live-wire race going down to the final round this weekend involving now joint leaders Social Club and St. David's.

Social Club have themselves to blame for allowing St. David's to draw even on points by losing to St. George's on Saturday (see story on Page 27) – but both teams managed to win their games yesterday.

St. George's CC 97

St. David's 98-6

At Wellington Oval, the home side virtually surrended by managing to field just ten-men against the Islanders – an embarrassing development for the home side who had to turn to coach George Cannonier to increase their numbers to ten.

One expected St. George's to be inspired going into this contest after shocking Social Club but this was not to be.

Their batting was brittle and they succumbed in a mere 20.2 overs with veteren Herbie Bascome top scoring on 24 and Ankoma Cannonier chipping in with an undefeated 23 with Rudell Pitcher hitting ten and 22 runs from extras enabling them to creep close to the three-figure mark.

Arthur Pitcher was the bowling hero for the visitors taking five for 55 off 10 overs while George O'Brien Jr. claimed three for 41 off 10 overs with three maidens.

Although David's required a mere 15.1 overs to reach their winning target they had a few bumps along the way and lost six wickets.

Openers Chris Foggo and Sammy Robinson gave them a healthy start with a stand of 41 in just 19 minutes with Foggo scoring 33 and Robinson 10, but after a few setbacks caused them to play more cautiously the inevitable triumphant end eventually came their way.

Justin Pitcher was also among the runs with 18 while player-coach Lionel Cann knocked up a quick 12 by hammering three straight fours.

Kyle Hodsoll was the top bowler for the home side with two for 16 off 4.1 overs while Allan Douglas Jr. claimed two for 63 off six overs and Rudell Pitcher one for 18 off 5 overs.

Flatts 237

At Lord's, Social Club were forced to sweat it out in this 45-run victory over lowly Flatts.

Batting first, Social Club built their formidable total thanks to a brisk 60 from opener Glenn Blakeney who struck 11 fours.

Several others made major contributions including his opening partner Winston Simmons with 55 (six fours), Jahmiko Marshall 47 (five fours and one six) and Charlie Marshall 40 (three sixes and three fours). Social Club used up 43.1 overs.

Isaiah Lewis was the leading bowler for Flatts, taking five for 31 off five overs with a maiden while James Celestine finished with three for 93 off nine overs and Vernon Eve two for 40 off 10 overs.

Flatts made a spirited response but just didn't have sufficient batting to pull off a startling victory.

Young Regino Smith top scored with 54 (six fours and three sixes) while Ronald Gibbons hit 49 and player-coach Dean Minors scored 46.

Social Club skipper Kevin Hurdle led their attack with two wickets for 55 off ten overs while Kenny Phillips claimed two for 58 off 10 overs.

Southampton Rangers 154

Cleveland 155-6

Visiting Cleveland handed home side Southampton Rangers a surprise loss, beating them by four wickets at Southampton Oval.

Rangers' skipper Kwame Tucker led their batting with 44 with player-coach Janeiro Tucker 13 runs behind on 31 and veteran opener Keith Wainwright contributing 20. Rangers were dismissed in 37.2 overs.

Pamari Tucker had the best bowling figures for Cleveland with three for seven off six overs and two maidens. Barry Gibbons claimed three for 32 off 9.2 overs and Dennis Musson Jr. two for 37 off seven overs.

Western Stars 117

At St. John's Field, visitingSomerset coasted to a 80-run victory, thanks to a well-struck 72 by former Stars' player Jekon Edness.

Brian Hall was the top bowler for Stars with three for 32 off 7.3 balls while Machai Campbell claimed three for 46 off nine overs with a maiden.
