'Spent' Woods pulls out of PGA play-off

ATLANTA (Bloomberg) — Tiger Woods won't play in next week's Barclays golf tournament, the first of the US PGA Tour's four play-off events, the world's top-ranked golfer said in a statement.

Woods, who won his 13th major title on August 12 at the PGA Championship, and in turn qualified for the PGA Grand Slam of Golf event to be held in Bermuda in October, said he was "mentally and physically" drained after playing the past two weeks in hot and humid conditions.

"My body is spent and I need a short break," said Woods, who won the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational the previous week, in a statement on his website. "Major championships are gruelling experiences and usually necessitate recovery time."

The US PGA Tour created its first-ever play-off system this season, in part as a way to get golf's top players to play more often. Woods leads the season-long playoff points competition and will still qualify for the second playoff tournament, the Deutsche Bank Championship near Boston.

During last week's PGA Championship, Woods repeatedly said he "intended" to play in all four play-off events.

Woods, 31, hosts the Deutsche Bank tournament at the TPC Boston course in Norton, Massachusetts. He is the defending champion of the four-year-old event, which benefits his charitable foundation.

"I just hope that this extra week of rest will rejuvenate me," he said.

The Barclays will be played at the 88-year-old Westchester Country Club in Harrison, New York. Woods hasn't played a tournament at the course since the 2003 Buick Classic, when he tied for 13th. The event will move to Liberty National Golf Club in Jersey City, New Jersey, in 2009.

Woods said his goal is to "win every event" he enters. "If I don't feel that way prior to a tournament, I won't commit."
