Sir,
Three words - worthless and pathetic - these were perhaps the most poignant words used by one Bermudian when questioned by ZBM's crack reporter Ian Rawlins about the Bermuda national cricket team's performance against champions Guyana in the Stanford 20/20 tournament.
I believe most Bermudians who watched the match would agree with him. Fortunately I saved myself much anguish by changing the channel as soon as Lionel Cann got out.
But these words, worthless and pathetic, should not be applied to the team's performance alone, they can also be applied to the team's preparation.
Skipper Irving Romaine complained before the match that the team was not provided with a proper field to train on. He was absolutely right to complain, it is almost criminal that with three national teams preparing for international competition, the senior squad, the women's team and the under-19s that the BCB did not secure Sea Breeze Oval the home of one of their affiliates Bailey's Bay to train on.
The weekend weather between September and December was ideal for playing cricket and with all the money at their disposal they really have no excuse for not securing that field and employing a decent grounds man like Mr. Sheridan Raynor or Mr. 'Shot' Carlington to prepare the wicket.
Speaking of money, with all the money flowing into the Board's coffers from the Bermuda Government, the ICC, the Stanford 20/20 Foundation not to mention the millions acquired as a result of Bermuda's participation in the World Cup, it is amazing that the public have not been regularly provided with financial reports. Again the lack of transparency by the Board has been worthless and pathetic.
So where do we go from here? There must be change at the very top it is time for Reggie Pearman to step aside and hand over the reigns to Allen Richardson. Pearman has been on the executive of the Board for over 30 years and has failed miserably to guide the organisation in the right direction.
He must accept some responsibility for Sunday's 'debacle' and fall on his sword. Allen Richardson who is much younger has the energy, vision and enthusiasm to move the game forward should replace him.
