SPORTS MAILBOX
Dear Sir,
I could not help but notice a rather scathing letter to Sports Mailbox regarding the administration of local cricket.
The writer who dubbed himself 'allergic to incompetence' raised many disturbing and thought-provoking issues. The picture painted was one of 'doom and gloom'.
However, I am not quite sure the writer has taken into account that there is a new Minister of Sports – Mr. Elvin James.
'Big El', as he is commonly known, deserves a chance to turn things around and ensure that the game is run properly in Bermuda. Judging from comments he has made both publicly and privately he has some big plans for not only cricket but sports in general.
I would encourage 'allergic to incompetence' to exercise a bit of patience and watch closely as Minister James turns things around.
On another note it appears that Stanford 20/20 cricket time is here again. I could not help but note that the one cricketer we have who is ideally suited to this game has been left out of the training squad. That player is none other than former Bermuda captain Charlie Marshall.
Now I know Charlie has had his ups and downs with the BCB but to leave him out of the team is a terrible mistake. Charlie wears his heart on his sleeve when it comes to representing his country and is not afraid to stand up and be counted when the chips are down.
He has demonstrated time and time again a fierce competitive nature and is not too old to compete in a 20/20 match. I would encourage chief selector Arnold Manders and his panel of selectors to reconsider and bring Charlie into the side.
