'They don't want me' says Goater
Shaun Goater has broken his silence on his snub from Bermuda Football Association (BFA) as his application for the youth director's post continues to gather dust.
Despite officially applying for the vacant position almost 12 months ago, the Bermuda football legend said he was still waiting for a response and has now demanded closure from the BFA.
Staggeringly, Goater first expressed his interest in the crucial role while plying his trade with English outfit Southend.
"I officially applied for the post about a year ago but I've received no feedback and nothing in writing," revealed Goater. "It makes me suspect the BFA don't want me. I'm still waiting for an answer and I'll watch this space with interest.
"Should I be surprised? I'm really not sure. Maybe this is how the BFA operates. I'm definitely looking for closure on the issue."
Goater had even started assembling his crack team of coaches to assist him in rolling out his European flavoured programme, which he said had been met with a "favourable response" from the BFA's executive committee.
The Bermuda Hogges president admitted to being dismayed with the BFA's failure to notify him of their decision and revealed his requests for an answer had fallen on deaf ears.
"They have certainly had my application for long enough to make a decision," said Goater. "Talks began while I was still playing for Southend. I wrote proposals about what should be put in place in terms of youth development, primarily looking at the six to 16 age group.
"While I was playing in England I always anticipated coming back to Bermuda and assisting in the BFA's youth programme. I believe the committee members were in favour of me coming onboard and I was excited about the prospect of shaping Bermuda's young players.
"The programme was similar to those being used throughout Europe. Every young player would have received the same football grounding and given a foundation to move up to the next level."
The former Manchester City marksman was first linked with the youth director's job in January, 2007 when BFA president Larry Mussenden told The Royal Gazette that Goater "clearly had a contribution to make to football in Bermuda".
Yesterday Mussenden said he would not comment on specific applications.
"The youth director's position has not been officially advertised," said Mussenden. "We had been waiting to appoint our technical director before looking at filling any other positions.
"Derek Broadley, our new technical director, starts his role on April 1 and will play a part in the selection process."
Last month ex-Crystal Palace academy director Broadley was unveiled as technical director.
The BFA has previously maintained they would only hire a youth director, youth coordinator and fund development manager once the TD was appointed.
