Thompson and McMullen claim off-road cycling titles

Pre-race favorites Garth Thomson and Kim McMullen came away from the 2008 Winners Edge Bermuda National Mountain Biking Championships with the national titles on a damp and muddy track at Ferry Reach Park. With 50 registered participants in categories ranging from those under 10 years old up to the open categories of the title winners, the morning proved to be a worthy test of technical ability and physical strength.

Though Thomson crashed hard at the first turn of the course on loose gravel, he quickly remounted and despite the seriousness of his injuries he caught back on to eventual second and third place finishers Neil de Ste Croix and Mark Hatherley. De Ste Croix has his own difficulties in advance of the start of the competition when his bike frame suffered a break that forced him to borrow another from one of the junior competitors already finished racing. Though giving it his all, he had no answer to the powerful Thomson.

While McMullen was again the sole competitor in the women's open category, she set her own pre-race goal of staying ahead of the Intermediate men's group which started just behind her. This she was able to achieve and sailed through the finish line after over an hour of racing like she could go for many more laps.

In other categories, Jeff Amaral won the intermediate men's group ahead of Peter Dunne, Maryellen Goodwin picked up the intermediate women category trophy uncontested, Scott Mello bested Riaan Naude for the men's novice title with Philandro Hill recovered sufficiently from last week's crash to take third, and Sarah Bonnett winning the women's novice group in front of Sarah Jordan.

The junior titles were won by Alex Godfrey (Boys 15/16), Izabella Arnold (Girls 13/14) Brighton Swan (Boyls 13/14), Gabriella Arnold (Girls 11/12), Daniel Oatley (Boys 11/12) Jessie Godfrey (Girls 10 & Under) and Ryan Day (Boys 10 & Under).
