Thompson: We paid the price for our lapses of concentration
Bermuda coach Kenny Thompson said his side had suffered from concentration lapses and had had a lesson in technical skills from the Canadians.
“At this level you have to keep going even under difficult circumstances.
“I thought in the first half the first goal and the third goal were a result of our team losing the ball and taking a jog back into position and getting caught out before we could put the block in place.
“We have to be prepared to fight through fatigue and organise ourselves a lot quicker.
Quizzed about his five-man midfield which saw Bermuda create little up front Thompson said: “This was not an opponent we could dominate for long periods of time — we are not looking to be defensive but it’s important for us to remain compact for long periods so we can break from these positions.”
The lack of firepower he blamed on poor technical skills. “We take too long to get the ball under control. You take an extra touch and the moment is gone.
“Today there were opportunities to advance a little further but the pass wasn’t precise enough or it was hit too hard.”
At half-time he had urged players to weight passes better in order for the receiver to make more use of what they are given.
“At one-nothing we had a good situation from right back and Gumbo hit the post. He made a good forward run and he kind of lost his balance and unfortunately he hit the post. At that moment it is 1-1 and we can start all over again.
“We had one or two situations later in the half I thought we controlled the match a little bit more for about seven minutes and then we were hit by a third because we didn’t chase back enough.”
And he said Bermuda had not retained possession long enough to create much.
“If we were to play with more attackers and leave more space in the midfield — you saw on the first and third goal what happens when the opponent has more space to play through.
“I thought we did it very well, remaining compact. But we have to be consistent. We cannot lose focus because when we do the opponent makes us pay.
“Overall I thought the team performed very well. We were not so bad, it was just small lapses in concentration.”
At half time he had urged his men to battle more.
“In the second half we got 0-0 and it was difficult for the players you could see they were struggling but this time they were prepared to run a little bit more and to fight through.
“We are still building long term we need to develop our fitness a little bit more. I am pleased — more pleased with this performance than the two performances against the Revolution and the Galaxy.
“It’s very difficult, this group of players have been fantastic in terms of their commitment we can do some good things.
Thompson said Fulham winger Tomasz Radzinski had been a handful as had Dwayne DeRosario who had an excellent game on the left.
“All over the field they were very strong and very technical. It’s a big difference. I believe we can be more competitive against these sorts of opponents but it will certainly take time and we will have to do things a lot more differently than we are accustomed to.
“The club level is not enough to be competitive at international level. We just have to do a little bit more.”
