Thomson wins Caribbean bronze medal

Garth Thomson: Earned third place in Martinique.

Garth Thomson confirmed his status as the top Bermuda-based cyclist by scooping a bronze medal at the 2007 Caribbean Cycling Championships in Martinique.

The Canadian speedster's latest accolade follows on from his men's open title at the CD&P Grand Prix, a third place in the Bank of Bermuda Foundation Triathlon and bronze at the Island Games in Rhodes.

Thomson finished the 43km time trial course with a time of one hour, four minutes and 51 seconds, just one minute and 29 seconds behind the winner Robert Bummann of the British Virgin Islands.

But the gruelling race, held in scorching conditions, left Thomson suffering from heatstroke and he was unable to recover in time to compete in the following day's road race.

Manager Greg Hopkins accompanied Thomson to the French Island of Martinique and said despite being unable to race in both events the trip had certainly been worthwhile.

"The Caribbean Cycling Championships is traditionally an event Bermuda has done well in with Kris Hedges winning gold in the time trial last year, the third time he has done so.

"It attracts a high calibre of cyclists from 17 countries but this year we were only able to send Garth with Kris (Hedges) back at university, Tyler Butterfield off Island and Geri Mewett unavailable.

"Garth had a tremendous race, dug deep, and gave everything he had - it was very tight at the top. He has been riding extremely well of late and at the moment he's probably the best cyclist based in Bermuda.

"Unfortunately, he was unable to compete in the road race the next day (Sunday) as he was unwell and suffering from heatstroke. The bronze medal wasn't entirely unexpected for Garth but it's still a great achievement."

The Caribbean Cycling Championships had suffered multiple postponements due to the devastating effects of Hurricane Dean last August.
