Town bidding for third crown in season finale

Dandy Town will be gunning for a third FA Cup title when they come up against league and Martonmere Cup champions PHC Zebras in tomorrow's season finale at the National Sports Centre (NSC).

Town are one of only three teams who have beaten Zebras over the past six months and with another victory over Kyle Lightbourne's men they can hang up their boots for the summer on a high note.

Under the captaincy of Walter Musson, Hornets raised a maiden FA Cup in 1986-87 after edging Zebras 1-0 in a replay. And tomorrow they will be counting on lightning to strike twice although coach Scott Morton is wary his team may have a tough fight on their hands.

"Victory is never guaranteed and it's important we stay focused on what we have to do and try and play in a manner that is comfortable to us," said Morton, who coached North Village to back-to-back FA Cup triumphs in 2001-02 and 2002-03.

Town are making their ninth appearance in the FA Cup final and first since the 2003-04 season when David Lawler's thunderous blast gave the St. John's Road team a 2-1 victory over Devonshire Cougars in a replay.

Like Zebras, Hornets possess lethal firepower in the form of strikers Antwan Russell and Darron (Duke) Simons while forwards Heys Wolfe, Micheal Parsons, Seion Darrell and Lashun Dill can also prove a handful if not kept under wraps.

But it's the experience of veteran striker Simons - a product of Hornets' Commercial outfit Dandy Town Roots - that Town are most likely to pin their FA Cup hopes upon tomorrow.

Simons, who has banged in three goals in this year's competition, is one of those players capable of exploding on a moment's notice.

The 37-year-old marksman was a member of Town's 1993-94 and 2001-02 FA Cup losing teams but hopes his fortunes will take a turn for the better tomorrow in his search for an FA Cup winner's medal - the only domestic major to elude him.

"It's a pleasure to be back in the final and I am positive we can win," Simons told The Royal Gazette. "We have the players to do it but it's important we come with a positive attitude and stick to the game plan."

Zebras suffered a 7-3 pasting against North Village in the Friendship Trophy final in their previous outing. But Simons has warned his team-mates not to take their opponents' recent humbling for granted.

"Even though PHC lost 7-3 they are going to be hungry," he said. "So we can't take them for granted. We just have to stick to our game plan and try and take away their running game."

Tomorrow's action at the NSC begins with the Under-18 final at noon between Southampton Rangers and Somerset Eagles followed by the Women's FA Cup featuring Lady Cougars and last year's beaten finalists Dandy Stars.
