<Bz25>Trojans seeking to settle old score
Somerset Trojans will travel to St.John’s Field with a three-year-old FA Cup score to settle with hosts Dandy Town.
During the 2003-04 FA Cup semi-final at Wellington Oval, Hornets hammered Trojans 5-0 to book their seventh overall appearance in the final against Devonshire Cougars.
At the time Trojans were in the First Division while Hornets were flying high in the top flight.
However, the roles could very well be reversed during tomorrow’s elimination round of the prestigious competition at the Barn where a lukewarm Town lock horns with a team that has only lost one game so far this season.
Both clubs will be without key players who departed for Barbados with the national team for next week’s Digicel Cup, though Hornets will be the least affected as only defender Dennis Zuill will miss the match through national team duty.
Conversely, Trojans will be without skipper Jelani Scott, top ‘keeper Timmy Figureido and striker Stephen Astwood, but should still prove more than a handful for their struggling urban rivals who won’t need reminding of the 4-0 spanking Somerset dished out to them the last time they visited the Barn.
Trojans also edged Town 1-0 at Somerset Cricket Club last month.
Still, this is a cup tie where past results account for very little on the actual day and capitalising everything.
Therefore, this match could very well go down to the wire and be decided by the odd goal as both combatants undoubtedly have something to prove to themselves — and also to the rest of the Island.
Elsewhere, Premier Division Boulevard are favoured to advance over Commercial side Tuff Dogs at BAA Field while Devonshire Cougars should easily dispose of Island XI at the same venue.
Blazers’ Stanton Lewis and Cougars’ Domico Coddington, Darius Cox and Kwame Steede will all miss tomorrow’s matches through national team duty in the Caribbean.
PHC Zebras are facing a tricky cup tie against Social Club at Bernard Park.
Zebras, already faced with player unavailability, will be further depleted with the loss of skipper Blenn Bean and player/coach Kyle Lightbourne — both away with the national squad.
A Kentoine and Keith Jennings-less North Village should still prove to be too much for Commercial outfit Lobster Pot at Bernard Park while Somerset Eagles are favoured to come away with the goods against Division One whipping boys Hamilton Parish at White Hill Field.
First Division Southampton Rangers and Commercial side Key West Rangers both received byes.
