West takes honours in double duel
The West swept the Bermuda Football Association (BFA) All-Star matches at the National Sports Centre (NSC) last night.
On a night were the achievements of local player's contributions throughout the season where acknowledged, a healthy crowd was on hand to witness the All-Star spectacle held by the BFA.
The matches, which were held at the NSC, featured both the Premier Division All-Star match as well as the First Division All-Star game.
The First Division All-Star match started the night with the best of the East squaring off against the West.
The match was played in good spirit, with neither side playing overly aggressive, yet playing good attractive football.
The East side had the first and arguably best chance of the half, only for the goal to be disallowed.
A back pass was picked up by the West goalkeeper, resulting in an indirect free-kick.
The ensuing free-kick was taken as a direct free-kick by Nathan Simons, which he proceeded to smash into the back of the net.
To the dismay of the East fans, the referee had signaled for an indirect free kick, resulting in a goal kick for the East.
The West held the bulk of the possession in the first half as they tried to lay the groundwork for some enterprising football.
But the majority of the quality chances fell to the East who also had a chance crash off the woodwork.
The second half saw the game come to life as the West took the lead through Southampton Rangers midfielder Jahni Bean.
A cut back went through the box without a touch and found Bean unmarked at the far post to calmly slot home from close range.
To add a bit of spice to the match as time was winding down, the East attempted to sneak an extra player onto the pitch in an attempt to score the equalizer.
In the end it was not enough as the one goal lead held up, giving the West the opening match, 1-0.
"It was a fun game, something that players needed," said East striker Vincent Minors Jr. "It gives the players a chance to give back and show thanks for the fans that come out week in and week out.
"The All-Star game was a good idea, and I am just glad I was apart of this showpiece."
The main event of the evening had the best of the Premier league doing battle in their All-Star match, with the West winning an open affair 4-3.
The fireworks in the Premier Division match started as early as the fourth minute as an own goal by East defender Ki-Juan Franks set the tone for an explosive encounter.
Not more than two minutes later, the East found a way back into the match courtesy of a sterling finish by Phil Anderson, a clinical header that left the goalkeeper rooted to the spot.
From this point forward, both sides applied pressure to get the all-important goal.
Yet there was flair in the match, with Shane Hollis, representing the East, producing a few tricks for the crowd to applaud.
The West took a 2-1 lead after a failed attempt at a clearance.
The goal came by the way of a cross that the East 'keeper, Dwayne Adams, could only push onto the post for Ireland Rangers striker Johnny Bean to slot home the rebound.
And with the East looking to get an immediate response, they fell further behind in the shape of a Keston Lewis deflected shot that looped over the East 'keeper.
Once the third was leaked, the air went out of the East, and the game as well.
The West played possession ball as the game started to become stretched in the midfield and players were starting to find gaps.
But the East pulled a game back through Shane Hollis, who scored a spectacular goal to pull his side back within one.
And in typical fashion of how the match had been played all night, it was Johnny Bean again who put the West ahead by two, adding to the goal he already had on the scoresheet.
Robert Wilson, surging forward from the back, latched onto a cross to pull the East side back within one once again.
Yet for all the East's determination and application to the task at hand, they were always second best on a night that the West dominated.
